Early years foundation stage
Our settings follow the government based framework for early learning called the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
The EYFS is split into four themes:
- A Unique Child
- Positive Relationships
- Enabling Environments
- Learning and Development
These four themes are the key principles that underpin effective practice in the care, development and learning of young children.
A Unique Child commits to child development, inclusive practice, keeping safe and health and wellbeing.
Positive Relationships commits to respecting each-other, parents as partners, supporting learning and the key person approach.
Enabling Environments commits to observation, planning and assessment of children, supporting every child, the learning environment and the wider context (e.g. working in partnership with other settings, professionals and community groups).
Learning and Development commits to play and exploration, active learning, creativity and critical thinking and areas of learning and development. Learning and development is made up of six areas:
- Communication, language and literacy
- Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy
- Personal, social and emotional development
- Physical development
- Creative development
- Knowledge and understanding of the world
At Petit Enfant we ensure that each individual child’s needs are meet through the Key Person Approach. Each child Key person will take responsibility for carrying out your child observations, and knowing what interests them which feeds the planning. Each area of Learning and development are connected to one another and are equally important.

Nursery Education Grant
The Government introduced the Nursery Education Grant to provide a free early education place for most 3 year olds and all 4 year olds. A grant may therefore be available for your child. The amount available per child changes from year to year depending on government funding, the setting manager will be able to confirm the current amount to you and to explain how the system works in the setting
